THE ROOM
2016

Nicosia, Cyprus

This project aimed firstly to investigate the assumption that the
positioning of the most mundane objects matters in the
interpretation of a space.

In order to invoke an unusual experience of an ordinary
domestic space, common objects were misplaced.

The goal was to inspire each individual to find a rationale for these
placements, create new stories and invoke various
emotions and reactions.

RESULT: 120 QUESTIONNAIRES ANSWERED, AND STORIES FABRICATED FROM EACH VISITOR'S CORE TRUTHS. SEE QUESTIONNAIRE BELOW.

[DISCLAIMER]: THE VISITORS OF THE EXPERIENCE WERE INSTRUCTED TO START CHEWING A BUBBLEGUM
AS SOON AS THEY ENTER, AND STICK IT ON THE SLIDING GLASS DOOR JUST BEFORE THEY EXIT.
This was a decision made after discovering through research that when the jaw is active,
the brain has a higher percentage of generating focus.

Discovering the hidden narratives of objects and altering them was a revealing experience. The installation was opened for public view, inviting visitors to interact with the unconventional layout and later answer a structured questionnaire developed, a process that successfully proved my assumption. This project prevailed through an excavation of research regarding the psychology of space, interpretation and subjective relation to objects, and the concept of domesticity; as well as neuroscience. To make it as interactive and subliminal as possible, research was also made on the spherical gathering of personal data, in order to engage a schemingly evident introspection from the visitors.

THE FLOOR PLAN

One of the most interesting aspects of this project was that I gradually became part of this room since. It was “habitat” for a month, making me realize how connected an artist can be with her artwork.
